The new multi purpose hall in Korsvoll is used by children, parents, caregivers, and kindergarten staff, renters of the assembly hall, young and older athletes, as well as other members of the local sports club, Korsvoll IL.

In the process of adorning the hall with an artwork, HAC functioned as consultant and curator. Together with the artistic board, we decided that the concept of play should function as a frame for the project. The works should give the users of the environment new bodily experiences, function as a fundament for imagination and engage with children and youth in a way that speaks to them.

In 2022, the artistic board, led by HAC, chose Shahrzad Malekian to undertake the project. Malekian, a part of the artistic collective Tenhouse, is a multidisciplinary artist, working with performance, video and sculpture. Her works revolves around the relationship between interpersonal relationships and the body, gender and the complexity of social relationships.

Malekian’s project for the hall consists of  three parts: A series of play inducing sculptures that can be found both outside the hall and indoors, a series of gatherings with the local community and a performance.

In the gatherings, local residents of all ages contributed ideas and suggestions for the works. The goal was to ensure the sculptures would have a dynamic presence in the social hub that the multipurpose facility is now, and will continue to be, for the foreseeable future.

In November 2024 a book about the project, exploring play as a critical tool, will be released with Torpedo press.
