The tide does not rise equally wherever you are. On the west coast of Norway, in Egersund, Rogaland, there is no difference between high and low tide. This is caused by a combination of underwater topography and the Coriolis effect creating what is called an amphidromic point. This phenomenon has been of central importance for both the economical and cultural life in this region.

To highlight this unique phenomenon has been a longstanding wish in the municipality. It became a fruitful subject when conversations between Eigersund Næring og Havn KF, Eigersund Municipality and Magma UNESCO Global Geopark started exploring ways in which an artistic intervention could contribute to the urban development plan, connecting the city with the sea and the vision of a sustainable future.

When HAC first got involved it was initially imagined as a singular commissioned artwork, but in the initial meetings, we decided to develop it into an art programme with talks, performances, works in public space and a residency programme. These different modes of artistic engagement became diverse ways in which both local and professional communities could gain a new understanding and appreciation for the specific conditions of the area. Still ongoing, the programme has also allowed for the project to stretch over time, allowing for a sustained engagement.

The programme consists of a performance series with Rine Rodin(SE/DK), a permanent work by Studio ThinkingHand(DK/AU), and a paid artists residency programme that we created in collaboration with Velferden Sokndals Scene for Contemporary Art.
