Through the Artist Residency at Velferden Sokndal Scene for Contemporary Art, we provided two professional artists with funding and accommodation to create work within Sokndal’s post-industrial landscape, which has been heavily influenced by the activities of the mining company Titania AS.

Located within the Magma UNESCO Global Geopark, this area is defined by its moon-like terrain, composed of Anorthosite rock, and the continuous transformation brought about by large-scale resource extraction. As part of the The Tide is Changing programme, and in collaboration with Velferden, the residency invited artists to engage with a human-altered landscape, contributing to the ongoing exploration of our evolving relationship with nature in the region.

Following an open call across the Nordic countries in spring 2022, we invited artists Nanna Elvin Hansen (DK) and Ase Brunborg Lie (NO) to take part in the residency. During their time there, they produced the video work Moving Mountains, which was later screened at the film festival CPH:DOX in 2023 and at Jøssingfjord Vitenmuseum in 2024.

Hansen and Lie spent three months researching the landscape, engaging with locals connected to the region’s industry and geography. Their work, Moving Mountains, traces the marks of past and ongoing mining activity while exploring how humans might assume roles of care and support in a narrative where the landscape itself becomes the central protagonist.

Three public talks were organized throughout the residency, with author and curator Eivind Hofstad Evjemo, artist Marte Johnslien and curator Ida Højgaard Thjømøe. The talks made moments of community involvement and mutual exchange between the artists and the local population.

The residency was supported by Nordisk Kulturfond, Kulturrådet, Rogaland Fylkeskommune, Egersund Næring og Havn KF, and Sokndal Kommune.
