In "Ebb and Flow", Rine Rodin (DK/SV) delves into our relationships with nature and one another, exploring themes of the moon, tides, magic and religion. This site-specific, participatory performance was curated as part of the art programme THE TIDE IS CHANGING in partnership with Jøssingfjord Vitenmuseum, Velferden Sokndal’s Centre for Contemporary Art, and Masterchef Rune Løyning. It was hosted over 10 days at two remarkable geosites within the Magma UNESCO Global Geopark: Jøssingfjord and Eigerøy Lighthouse.

Rodin’s work consisted of multiple participatory performances in which the local community played an active part in the work. Through these performances, divided into different chapters, the participants contributed to local tales being both revived and shared. These tales, representing an old tradition, were then archived for posterity. In a performance documented by drone shot, the locals populated the seaside with temporary, ephemeral sculptures and formations that echoed the moon’s visage. Located in the geopark, these performances became different ways for the community to engage in the transformative exercise of contemplating the relationship between human and non-human nature.

The performance’s last chapter included a prepared menu by Masterchef Rune Løyning that expanded our relationship to salmon using ingredients native to the local area, evoking recepies from the past, present, and future.

The project is supported by Art Council Norway, Nordic Culture Contact Mobility Funding, Jøssingfjord Vitenmuseum and Eigersund Næring og Havn KF.
